I support gay marriage, but probably for different reasons than most individuals. (“Straight talk on gay marriage,” Aug. 14)
I always hear of people agitating for domestic partner benefits, a benefit of marriage. I never, however, hear of anyone calling for sharing in the financial liabilities of marriage, such as a) being subject to the marriage tax penalty; b) having your credit rating adversely affected by the actions of another; c) having to pay a divorce attorney thousands of dollars to break what is in fact a legal contract; or d) having to pay maintenance to someone you can no longer stand.
It has always seemed to me supremely hypocritical that unmarried couples only want the “good stuff” and none of the bad. If you truly want to experience the legal and financial realities of marriage, and not just some romanticized notion of it, go for the liabilities of marriage, not just the benefits.

Hi Rita,
OK, what’s the connection between the RedEye and Red Streak crossword puzzle writers? Each day’s puzzle in RedEye features a word that also appears in the puzzle in that day’s issue of Red Streak. Today the word is “eerie.” RedEye’s clue is “Like Stephen King stories” and Red Streak’s clue is “Creepy.” Another day featured “nuclei” in each puzzle.
I have not documented this on paper, but I assure you that every day both puzzles feature a matching word, with different clues, and I announce the word to my officemates.
I suspect you have a mole. Or perhaps it’s intentional collusion. I just wanted to let you know that I’m on to you.

Jen,
Don’t you have a sharp pair of eyes! I don’t think they could have a mole over here, because we spray for rodents. But since the streaky paper has been copying RedEye since Day One, this is probably just more of the same. Isn’t that “eerie”?
Sincerely, Rita
