Oakland Athletics pitcher Mark Mulder has a stress fracture in his right hip, putting the rest of his season in jeopardy.
“Mark is not going to be here for awhile,” Athletics manager Ken Macha said Friday.
Macha and trainer Larry Davis would not speculate on how long the ace left-hander would be sidelined.
“I’m not going to even put a number on it,” Davis said.
Mulder had an MRI exam Thursday, and the team was surprised to see it showed a fracture. The Athletics weren’t sure how he hurt himself.
Mulder is 15-9 with a 3.13 ERA in 26 starts this season.
Red Sox’s Martinez still sick
Boston ace Pedro Martinez was still sick in bed Friday, a day after he was scratched from his start with a sore throat and fever. The Red Sox were hoping that he would be ready for his next scheduled start.
Martinez, who was scheduled to pitch Thursday, instead went to the hospital and was diagnosed with severe pharyngitis–inflammation of the throat. He was given medication for both the fever and the sore throat and was resting by late afternoon.
That’s where he was Friday when manager Grady Little called him.
Little wouldn’t rule out pitching Martinez before Tuesday, but he wasn’t counting on it, either. “He’s not even well enough to come to the park today,” Little said.
Lieber has successful outing
New York Yankees right-hander Jon Lieber allowed one run over four innings Friday in his second minor-league rehabilitation start since undergoing reconstructive surgery on his elbow one year ago.
In a Gulf Coast League game against the Phillies, Lieber gave up five hits and struck out five. He threw 39 of 47 pitches for strikes.
