The Township Highway District will pick up brush in unincorporated areas twice in the fall, Highway Commissioner Fred Burgess announced recently.

Whether the district will continue the brush-pickup program next year will depend on the conclusions of a citizens committee being established to study brush and leaf pickup, township Supervisor Jim Murphy said.

Burgess has said he believes the district can afford brush pickup, which would cost about $36,000 a year. But Murphy has said the township might not be able to afford leaf pickup, which would be far more expensive.

At a special meeting Aug. 19, citizens authorized the township to pick up brush and leaves, but this gave the township authority, not a mandate, to do so.
