For the past three years, Northwestern has featured a wide-open, no-huddle offense that clicked off plays quicker than a heartbeat. But in their opener Saturday at Kansas, the Wildcats looked downright conventional. They huddled up and quarterback Brett Basanez operated more from under center than from the shotgun. They rarely threw downfield and, most noticeably, rushed 52 times while throwing 36 times, though the rain was no doubt a factor. A new trend? Don’t bet on it.

“As much as I love Jason Wright (who had 41 carries), I’d rather throw it a few more times and keep him from being so banged up,” Basanez said. “We have a lot of stuff we didn’t run. We have it in the bank. We’re really excited to get this offense truly wide open.”
