After defeating two of the SICA Blue’s best teams, St. Rita might consider switching conferences.

The Mustangs of the Chicago Catholic Blue defeated Homewood-Flossmoor on opening night and then rallied to beat Lincoln-Way East 29-26 at home Friday.

Down 19-14 early in the second half, backup quarterback Michael Kafka rallied the Mustangs for two touchdowns. Starting quarterback Mike Cummings sustained an ankle injury right before halftime and returned briefly in the third quarter. Kafka, who normally lines up as a wide receiver, completed four of his six passes for 50 yards and ran for touchdowns of 5 and 26 yards.

“You just have to hold your breath and get the job done,” Kafka said of taking over at quarterback.

Lincoln-Way East (0-2) had a chance to tie the game with less than two minutes remaining, but Tyler Ellis’ 41-yard field goal was blocked. The Mustangs ran out the clock to end the game.

Junior Wade Weyer put St. Rita (2-0) ahead in the first quarter with a 70-yard run, followed by a 38-yard run in the second quarter to give his team a 14-7 advantage.
