Hard rockers and minimalist composers may play to different audiences, but they have a plenty in common, like a taste for repetition and a facility at getting the most out of simple materials. Growing, a youthful trio from Olympia, Wash., approaches their music from the accessible side of rock; they like their power chords big and meaty, and their song “Cutting, Opening, Swimming” even cops a riff from the Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood.” But the way they remorselessly cycle through their simple guitar progressions and deep electronic drones would do Philip Glass proud.
