This is director Robert Rodriguez’s attempt to create a big, stylishly violent pop epic within the “Mariachi” series. And it has the best cast–including the ineffably hilarious Johnny Depp, pulling off more movie piracy as a cynical, Machiavellian CIA agent named Sands. Depp and Cheech Marin (as Belini the well-soaked taleteller) supply most of the verbal humor in “Mexico.” This movie could’ve used more of them–and perhaps a little less of the formula bloodletting.
