I’ve been following Notre Dame football for more than 50 years. When coach Tyrone Willingham took over, it was a great relief that the Bob Davie era was over–it seemed ND had landed a coach who was successful and imaginative. And though the overall record for last year seemed good, it was obvious that offense was not up to speed for a big-time football program. For the most part, ND relied on defense and special teams to get the job done.
This season’s first game against Washington State revealed the same style, i.e. flounder around, expect the defense to hold the other team, try to score off a turnover and maybe the offense will show some spark at the end. If Washington State’s kicker hadn’t missed the overtime field goal, they might have played three or four overtime periods.
What happened to the heralded West Coast offense the coach was bringing with him? If the current starting quarterback can’t execute it, get someone who can. How can a team with the recruiting power of Notre Dame not get a top passing quarterback?
