Coach Ron Turner wants to get more people involved in the running game Saturday against California. Freshman E.B. Halsey was the only Illini running back to carry the ball in last weekend’s 6-3 loss to UCLA. In addition to rushing 24 times for 76 yards, Halsey caught two passes for 15 yards. “We played E.B. too much. He played 60-some plays,” said Turner. “We have to get Morris Virgil in there more and possibly some of our younger guys.” . . .

After amassing 78 yards in nine carries late in the 49-22 victory over Illinois State, freshman Pierre Thomas didn’t play in the UCLA game. “His knowledge of what we’re doing is very limited,” Turner explained. “If he learns the system better, then he will play more.”
