Redbirds running back Demetrus Johnson has a tough act to follow Saturday against Eastern Illinois–his own in last week’s 49-6 rout of Truman State. The Milwaukee native, a transfer from Minnesota, was named Gateway Conference offensive player of the week. He rushed for 132 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns, all in the first half. Johnson sat out the second half. . . . ISU leads the series 44-37-9. . . . Mike Souza ranks No. 1 among Gateway passers, throwing for an average of 179.7 yards per game. His top receiver, Dwayne Smith, a transfer from Illinois, leads the Gateway with 105 yards per game. In the Redbirds’ 49-22 loss to Illinois Sept. 6, Smith caught a school-record 14 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns.
