In coach Ron Turner’s opinion, inopportune mistakes are the reason Illinois (1-2) isn’t taking a perfect record into Saturday’s final non-conference game against California. “We’re making mistakes, not an abundance of them but at critical times, and we’re not making plays to overcome them,” Turner said. “Offensively, we have to execute better and find a way to make some plays.” . . . Strong safety Marc Jackson excelled in last weekend’s 6-3 loss to UCLA , making seven solo tackles plus an assisted tackle and the Illini’s only interception. . . . Steve Weatherford averaged 47.6 yards on seven punts. . . . Turner has been pleased with the performance of junior offensive tackle Bucky Babcock and redshirt freshman offensive guard Matt Maddox.
