The belated start of Illinois freshman running back Marcus Mason’s college career is expected to come Saturday against Wisconsin. Mason was impressive at training camp before his career was put on hold Aug. 12 when the NCAA Clearinghouse was asked to investigate his qualifying SAT score because of a substantial gain in his May test score vs. an earlier test. When the all-time leading Maryland high school rusher retook the test this month, his score was roughly the same as in May and he rejoined the team last week. . . . Mark Kornfeld has caught 18 passes this season and 15 of his catches have produced first downs. . . . Steve Weatherford, who sat out the opener, has averaged 47.1 yards for 16 punts in three games, making him No. 1 in the Big Ten and No. 4 nationally.
