Dan Osterhout’s assignment during the Carmel football team’s volunteer community service project in May was knocking down a wall of an old church. Osterhout wielded a sledgehammer in the rehab effort. On his final swing, Osterhout broke the shaft of the sledgehammer, sending the head flying, only to land on his foot. “Once I got back up and was OK, everyone cracked up laughing,” he said. “They started calling me Sledge-foot.”
