To say that I feel embarrassment and shame after reading Sgt. Christian Gonzalez’s letter is an understatement (“Marines miss welcoming ceremony,” Voice of the people, Sept. 16).

He and thousands of others in military service served our country in Iraq in grave danger and under deplorable conditions, and are arriving home with little or no gratitude or fanfare shown them.

Are we so busy in our daily lives that we are forgetting these real heroes?

May Gonzalez and his fellow soldiers forgive us.
