The return of John Smoltz, the lone player left in Atlanta from the 1991 “worst-to-first” Braves that started the run of 12 division titles, means less work for Will Cunnane, who spent 1994 with the Kane County Cougars (11-3, 1.43 ERA) and stopped in with the Cubs in 2002 (1-1, 5.47 ERA). With Smoltz bothered by elbow tendinitis and Darren Holmes on the DL in August with a shoulder strain, Cunnane provided some late-season relief help for the Braves. After starting the season with the Cubs’ Iowa affiliate, he signed with the Braves’ Richmond affiliate in July. His first win as a Brave came Sept. 5 (striking out the side vs. Pittsburgh) and converted three save chances in a four-game stretch Sept. 7-10.
