Glenbard Township School District 87 administrators debated this week a plan that would trim $2.5 million from the $7.3 million deficit for 2003-04.

“We’re still a long way from $7.3 million but we are committed to our plan to be debt-free in three years,” said Supt. Timothy Hyland.

The plan calls for slicing 12 faculty positions, the same number that was cut last year. It would also eliminate as many as 20 custodial and staff positions.

Two administrative positions totaling $200,000 will be eliminated under the proposed plan.

Cumulative deficits since 2002 reflect a district shortfall of close to $15 million, officials said.

“The infrastructure of our educational system is being removed,” said board member Kathleen Schmidt. “We’re taking out our foundation … and it’s impacting our students.”

The budget reduction plan also calls for an increase to $200 from $50 in driver’s education fees, which would provide a $300,000 fund increase. Teacher reductions would save $665,000, classified employee reductions $600,000; increased registration fees $315,000; and from the $2.9 million spent on extra-curricular activities, $300,000 would be slashed under the proposal.

The board is expected to vote on the plan Oct. 20.
