Need to cut back on the smelly garbage piling up in your house?
“People typically underutilize their disposers,” said David MacNair, vice president of marketing for garbage disposer manufacturer In-Sink-Erator.
MacNair offered these tips when using the disposer in your sink:
– Turn on a moderate to strong flow of cold water before turning it on. Continue running the water for 15 seconds after grinding is complete.
– Don’t cram in a bunch of vegetable peels all at once. Instead, turn the water and disposer on first and feed them in gradually.
– Avoid extremely fibrous materials such as corn husks and artichokes, which can block the drain.
– Bones, fruit pits, ice and other hard materials can be ground. The action of the disposer helps clean the system.
– Use disposer cleaners, degreasers or deodorizers to remove odors. You can also grind up peelings from citrus fruits to freshen up the smell of the drain.
