Saints 17, Buccaneers 14

Story line: John Carney’s 47-yard field goal with eight seconds left lifted visiting New Orleans (4-5) past Tampa Bay (4-4) for the third straight time.

Stars: Saints running back Deuce McAllister ran for 110 yards on 26 carries, while New Orleans forced six turnovers and sacked Brad Johnson four times. Ashley Ambrose returned one of his two interceptions 73 yards for a TD.

Extra points: Trailing 14-0 in the fourth quarter, the Bucs pulled even on Johnson’s 26-yard TD pass to Michael Pittman and a 30-yard strike to Keenan McCardell. McAllister topped 100 yards for the sixth straight game, breaking the Saints’ record of five set by Ricky Williams in 2000.

Giants 31, Jets 28

Story line: Brett Conway atoned for a missed field goal early in overtime by kicking a 29-yarder with four seconds to go in East Rutherford, N.J. Kerry Collins threw two TD passes for the Giants (4-4) and had a 19-yard pass to Amani Toomer to ignite the winning drive.

Stars: Despite three turnovers, Chad Pennington was outstanding in his first start this season for the Jets (2-6). He threw for 281 yards and four scores, the last a 9-yarder to tight end Anthony Becht with 29 seconds left in regulation. Santana Moss had TD catches of 8, 25 and 11 yards.

Extra points: The Jets had a chance to win in OT, but Doug Brien’s 49-yard field-goal attempt was blocked. Brien was still in his prekick routine when long snapper James Dearth snapped the ball because the play clock was down to one second and the Jets had no timeouts left.

Eagles 23, Falcons 16

Story line: Donovan McNabb took advantage of an entirely revamped Atlanta secondary to throw for a season-high 312 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown pass to Freddie Mitchell, and the visiting Eagles (5-3) won for the fifth time in six games.

Star: McNabb, the lowest-rated regular quarterback in the NFL coming in, completed 21-of-33 passes to go over 300 yards for the fourth time in his five-year career.

Extra points: Atlanta (1-7) has lost seven in a row. Coach Dan Reeves remains stuck at 199 wins as he tries to become the seventh coach in NFL history with 200 career victories.

Cowboys 21, Redskins 14

Story line: In Irving, Texas, the Cowboys overcame four first-half turnovers to improve to 3-0 against NFC East opponents. Troy Hambrick made up for two lost fumbles with two short touchdown runs. Terry Glenn made up for some awful drops, including one that led to Washington’s first touchdown, with a nice catch for a 19-yard TD that gave Dallas breathing room early in the fourth quarter.

Stars: Quincy Carter was 17-of-33 for 196 yards and Hambrick had 100 yards on 21 carries, helping the Cowboys (6-2) win for the sixth time in seven games.

Extra points: Washington (3-5) had minus-11 yards passing at halftime. Dallas has won 11 of last 12 against the Redskins.

Texans 14, Panthers 10

Story line: Tony Banks, the first quarterback other than David Carr to start for the second-year Texans (3-5), hit tight end Billy Miller on a 20-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter to erase a 10-7 deficit in Houston.

Stars: Banks was 13-of-19 for 154 yards with no interceptions and no fumbles. In 85 previous NFL games, he had 100 turnovers. Carolina’s Stephen Davis, the NFC’s leading rusher, finished with 153 yards on 30 carries.

Extra points: Already without Carr (sprained ankle), Houston lost rookie tailback Domanick Davis to a strained chest muscle in the second half after a 74-yard day. Davis was trying to become the first player to run for 100 yards in each of his first three NFL starts.

Quote: “I’ll feel better about picking my check up this week.”–Banks, who didn’t take a single snap last season.

Ravens 24, Jaguars 17

Story line: With the Ravens’ offense struggling, the defense delivered the knockout blow in Baltimore. Ray Lewis had 14 tackles and a key interception, and the Ravens benefited from three fourth-quarter turnovers by Jacksonville quarterback Byron Leftwich.

Stars: Ravens’ defense. Baltimore (5-3) led 13-10 heading into the fourth quarter, then converted Leftwich’s two fumbles into 10 points before Lewis secured the win by picking off a tipped pass with 44 seconds left.

Extra points: The Jaguars (1-7) held the NFL’s leading rusher, Jamal Lewis, to 68 yards on 21 carries, ending his run of successive 100-yard games at six. Lewis did surpass 1,000 yards (1,045) by the halfway mark of the season.

Quote: “When you play a team like we played today, you have to find a way to get your hands on the football. We did exactly what we needed to do to come out and win.”–Ray Lewis.

Seahawks 23, Steelers 16

Story line: Darrell Jackson, who dropped six straight passes through three quarters, scored a fourth-quarter touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Matt Hasselbeck and set up another late score with a 43-yard catch in Seattle.

Stars: Hasselbeck was 18-of-31 for 215 yards and a score.

Extra points: The Steelers (2-6) lost their fifth straight, their longest losing streak since dropping six in a row in 1999.

Quote: “I appreciate that love I got when they started to yell. So I gave a little love back.”–Jackson, responding to fans cheering in jest late in the third quarter when he finally made a reception. He raised his arm and bobbed his head in acknowledgment.

Cardinals 17, Bengals 14

Story line: Marcel Shipp, the Arizona starter since Emmitt Smith broke his left shoulder blade a month ago, carried 29 times for 141 yards in Tempe, Ariz., helping the Cardinals snap the Bengals’ two-game winning streak. Jeff Blake (18-of-28 for 166 yards) passed for two TDs for Arizona (3-5).

Star: Shipp became the first Cardinal since Johnny Johnson in 1992 to have consecutive 100-yard rushing games. He gained 165 yards last week in a win over San Francisco.

Extra points: Paid attendance at Sun Devil Stadium was 23,531.
