TWO-MINUTE DRILL (If you read slowly)
– Green Bay’s Brett Favre needs four TD passes to tie Dan Marino’s NFL record of 10 straight 20-touchdown-pass seasons. Gee, wonder if he makes it.
– With 873 more yards, Indy’s Peyton Manning will be the first NFL passer to open his career with 3,000 yards in each of his first six seasons. An outside chance he gets 873 against the Jaguars this week.
– One reason why Detroit’s Joey Harrington is smiling: The Lions’ offensive line has allowed 5.0 sacks and is on target to surrender 10.0, a Lions all-time low.
– It’s a long shot, but with 1,045 yards after eight games, Baltimore’s RB Jamal Lewis has a shot at Eric Dickerson’s NFL record of 2,105 yards in 1984. That year, Dickerson had 925 yards after eight games. Intriguing, no?
– Jets RB Curtis Martin (580 yards) won’t catch Dickerson, but if he cracks 1,000, he’ll be only the second player in history to get 1,000 yards each of his nine seasons. Barry Sanders did it 10 times.
– With one sack last week, the Bucs set a new NFL record with 69 straight games with a sack. Too bad sacks don’t count as points.
Mandatory Bears item
As required by the Federal
Bears Coverage Act of 1986.
It’s important to remember that Bears coach Dick Jauron was a fourth-round draft pick of this week’s opponent, the Detroit Lions, in 1973. Jauron played five seasons there. Why is this important to remember? I don’t know. I forget.
