Apparently the thinking of Neuqua Valley sophomore Melissa Marik is why wait until the state series to start cuttting times down? Marik has a state-best 56.18 time in the 100-yard backstroke– nearly a full second better than her 2002 state-title time–and her 23.81 in the 50 freestyle is within four-tenths second of last year’s title-winning 23.41 by West Chicago’s Jackie Vavrek.
