It seems fewer Americans are plugged into the Matrix.
Sure, “The Matrix Revolutions” ruled the weekend box office with an estimated $50.16 million in ticket sales stateside, bringing its total to $85.5 million since opening Wednesday. But those numbers are down 45 percent from “The Matrix Reloaded,” which took in $134.2 million in its first four days back in May.
Of course, Warner Bros. preferred to focus on international figures. “Revolutions,” which simultaneously opened in 109 countries, racked up $204.1 million in five days–the highest worldwide total ever.
Buried beneath the hype was a strong opening for the Will Ferrell holiday comedy “Elf,” which made $32.1 million to finish second.
