Kashif Reyes scored eight of his 10 points in the final 2 1/2 minutes to help Chaminade beat Villanova 52-49 Monday in the opening round of the Maui Invitational and snap a 30-game losing streak in its own tournament.
The win was nowhere near the Division II school’s most famous–it beat then-No. 1 Virginia and Ralph Sampson 77-72 on Dec. 23, 1982–but it did set off an on-court celebration at the Lahaina Civic Center.
“I’m not sure how I feel,” fourth-year coach Aaron Greiss said. “I’m new at this, but it feels great.”
The Silverswords’ last win in the tournament was in the seventh-place game in 1992 in double overtime over Stanford. This win lifts their record in the tournament to 4-53.
“This was a great game for the program,” forward Sam Henning said. “People kept reminding us about how many years it’s been. For our program, it’s just great.”
Chaminade (1-0) will play the winner of the Hawaii-Santa Clara game in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Spartans’ guard sidelined
Michigan State freshman point guard Brandon Cotton is likely to miss at least a month with a possible stress fracture in his right foot. Cotton, a McDonald’s All-American last season, had two points in MSU’s season-opening 64-52 win over Bucknell on Friday.
