Numerous letters have been printed from people threatened and offended by secondhand cigarette smoke in public places and lauding community bans. It is a positive step to eliminate a pollutant, albeit a minor pollutant.

Greater strides could be achieved toward clean air if bans were placed on automobiles, especially the gas-guzzlers that spew carcinogens into the air, water and soil.

Jets, smokestacks, war machinery and refineries are more major polluters.
