Columnist Clarence Page opines that state-sanctioned same-sex marriage would have no impact on straight marriages (“A modest gay marriage proposal,” Commentary, Dec. 3).

“My wife and I would still be married,” he writes.

Yes, Clarence, you would still be married. But not to your “wife.”

If same-sex marriage is approved, the gender-specific terms “husband” and “wife” become obsolete. Worse, in fact, they become discriminatory.
