In a Nov. 30 letter to the editor, “Energy bill is good for Illinois and nation,” Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and U.S. Rep. John M. Shimkus (R-Ill.) provided that “this legislation is the most important piece of economic development legislation that the federal government could provide to the State of Illinois.” I agree that we need to reduce dependence on foreign oil, and I agree that the creation of jobs will benefit Illinois’ ailing economy. But there is a limit to the sacrifices that should be made. Do we really need to build a coal-fired power plant next to Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, near Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, or upwind of a school and a residential area for the elderly?
