Your story “Elgin school begins ban on hooded sweat shirts” in the Nov. 27 Metro section illustrates why many schools aren’t performing their function of educating our young.

The mission of our schools should be to provide education and an environment that enables this objective. Plain and simple.

Although most schools probably know this, they are continually thwarted by clueless parents who insist on supporting rebellious kids.

Come on, parents, how can your kids have the maximum learning experience when they are distracted by such idiotic things as a “hoodie” controversy?

When you send your kids to school wearing banned clothing, the only thing you are guaranteeing is they will ruin the learning experience not only for themselves but, sadly, for the other students that day.

Granted there should have been a little more notice for parents to adjust their kids’ wardrobes.

(About 10 minutes to cut the hood off).

But for the most part, the educators know best.

Support them.

Schools exist to teach, not to provide a forum for fashion.

Schools can’t perform their function without support from the parents.

It’s what separates the good from the bad schools.

And it’s easy to see what’s wrong with this picture.

Help your local school provide a good educational environment by supporting well-grounded rules that enable this objective.
