This is regarding columnist John Kass’ “When sick kids are sent to school, why no protests?” (News, Dec. 4). Employers routinely suspend, fire and threaten employees who miss work to take care of sick children. What do you do if you are a single mother or father, and the little one gets sick? Keeping him or her home is always the best option, but if your employer tells you either get in to work or be fired, well, it’s off to school for junior and into work for you. Most companies don’t offer sick time if the kids get sick; most don’t offer sick time if parents get sick. Your choices are stay home with junior and get fired or send him or her to school and pray they don’t call you to pick up junior.
My job as a union representative keeps me busy getting jobs back for parents who lose them due to staying home to take care of their sick children or themselves.
