Visitation for former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon, who died Tuesday from heart surgery complications, will be Saturday in Carbondale with funeral services the following day in the Southern Illinois community.

The two-term senator, who was 75, founded the Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale after his retirement from the Senate in 1997. He lived in nearby Makanda.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 700 S. University Ave., Carbondale. Funeral services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the SIUC Arena.

In lieu of sending flowers, Simon’s family asked that memorial contributions be made payable to the SIU Foundation and sent to the Public Policy Institute, Mailcode 4429, Carbondale, IL 62901.
