Letter writer Beth Marquardt is ashamed of being an American because someone her daughter knew died in Iraq (“Unjust war,” Voice of the people, Dec. 8).

How sad. How shameful.

Every death of a serviceperson is a terrible loss.

It has become clear to me that a large part of America does not “get it.” The United States removed a murderous tyrant who constantly threatened the stability of the Middle East and the world. The weapons of mass destruction did exist and they were used. Many Kurds were mercilessly gassed. I can assure Marquardt that being gassed is a horrible way to die. Wanton butchery and alleged genocide were good enough reasons to commit troops to Bosnia. The vast majority of our troops understand why it was important to liberate Iraq.

Marquardt’s children live in a safer world thanks to the sacrifice of our troops.
