“Longing for a town’s days gone by” (Voice of the people, Dec. 9) made a lot of sense to me, yet letter writer Michael Roche of Western Springs should heed the spirit of this season and be thankful for what he has. It is true that the Village of Western Springs has evolved into a community of monstrous houses that allow little sunlight to reach the ground.

During this holiday season, my family and I oft-times reminisce about our hometown of Maywood and what it used to offer its residents. Maywood of old would rival any artist’s rendition of the perfect village; for those who have a personal connection to Maywood, you are quite aware of its current state.

A village that once detailed its small shops and manicured homes with incredible wrap-around porches, Maywood is now a shell of its former self, perpetually teetering on bankruptcy, with more vacant lots and gangland murders than most affluent villages will see in a lifetime.

Roche has a valid gripe concerning change in his beloved community, yet as most people come to realize at some point in their lives, there is always somebody worse off than you.
