I’m not offended by John Kerry’s language, nor am I less likely to support him. (“Curses–why all the whining?” by Joe Stephen, Dec. 9) I feel he was being spontaneously emphatic on an emotional issue .

But although I’m OK with it in that context, the f-word is still considered a crudity in polite company, and I am fairly offended by the following statement in Joe Stephen’s column: “Let’s get real, people. Most of us utter, or at least overhear, that word more than once a day.” I’ve occasionally spent time in office situations around people who use the f-word frequently in casual conversation, and it was mostly seen as annoying and inconsiderate. Many people in Chicago are from cultures in which men and women would consider such behavior vulgar.
