I truly wish I could believe that President Bush’s motive in his Thanksgiving Day visit to Iraq was “derived from an internal decency,” as the Dec. 5 letter to the editor “Bush visited Iraq to give thanks” states.
I want to believe in our country’s leader and that his utmost concern is for the well being, safety and free liberties of all Americans.
But I cannot believe in this administration when it sends our men and women to Iraq without reasonable cause.
Each time a Republican asks the question, “Are you saying the Iraqis are not better off without the likes of the torturous Saddam Hussein?” I want to respond with, “the reason Bush used in declaring war was to protect Americans from the weapons of mass destruction he claims Iraq would use against us and he has found none.”
Every American wants to have faith in our president. Unfortunately Bush has done nothing to retain our faith and everything to test our beliefs in the principles this country was founded on. This administration has threatened our free speech by accusing anyone who has questions about its actions of treason and putting fear in the hearts of anyone who wishes to peacefully protest by instructing the FBI to investigate protests. When Bush stands on an aircraft carrier beneath a sign stating “Mission Accomplished” when the mission is unclear and far from being accomplished, Americans have every right and an absolute duty to question his motives.
When did we lose the right to ask questions of our leaders and when did they start arrogantly refusing to answer our questions?
