Ozzie Guillen got it wrong. Instead of calling out Frank Thomas with a “He’s going to play the game right,” he should have said, “It’s an honor to manage Frank, a man who respects the game and is one of the few hitters who hasn’t had to order larger-size caps and uniforms each year.”
Maybe the reason Thomas has pouted so much is the rage he feels inside at the sight of juiced-up mega-stars winning awards, home run derbies, slugging titles, huge money and hero worship from the media and fans.
The players union, the owners and the commissioner have for years agreed on a “show me the money” non-policy on steroids with a peaceful unanimity that is in itself a first in baseball history. And, Mr. Henry Aaron, how do you really feel about the popeyes who are soon to be cruising by your incredible home run records?
The “dead ball era?” Break out asterisks for the “steroid era.” And Frank, thank you.
