Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta has announced plans to join with the trucking industry to increase safety-belt use among the nation’s 11 million commercial truckers, only 48 percent of whom reportedly use their seat belts. The Transportation Department has released a study of 3,900 trucks in 12 states that found more than half of drivers don’t buckle up, even as safety-belt use rises to a high of 79 percent among the general public.
