Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

A double-digit deficit was hardly a problem for Trinity on Tuesday as the Blazers (4-2) stormed back from 16 points behind to upend No. 7 Benet 64-57.

“We got refocused in the locker room (at halftime) and we found out what we needed to do,” said senior Caprice Smith, who scored 29 points.

“We dominated the second half. Our defense really stepped up. We got defensive stops and it led to points.”

Smith was the catalyst in the third quarter, scoring seven points as the Blazers cut the Redwings’ advantage from 16 to 10 points (45-35) by quarter’s end.

But it was freshman Tonesha Members (11 points) who did some of the worst damage.

In the fourth quarter, the 5-foot-1-inch guard scored seven points over a two-minute span as Benet’s lead melted to 46-45 with 5:18 to play.

Smith hit a three-pointer 40 seconds later to give Trinity a 48-46 lead, its first of the game.

The Blazers never trailed the rest of the way as the Redwings (10-2) saw their offense sputter.

Benet was outscored 21-3 over a seven-minute span in the second half.

Senior Amy Hunckler paced Benet with 17 points.

The loss left Benet coach Peter Paul with 399 career victories. He’ll get another shot at 400 later this week against Hinsdale Central.
