This is regarding “U.S. denies allies contracts in Iraq” (Page 1, Dec. 10). I wonder whether your headline editor might need a new dictionary. In a subtitle, we learn that these “allies” are France and Germany, and that they are “foes” of our policy. In the text, we learn that these nations “opposed” the U.S., and that other “allies” failed to “support” the U.S.

I think if you consult a decent dictionary, you will find that the concepts of “foe,” “opponent” and “failing to support” are antonyms, not synonyms, of the word “ally.”
