I enjoy reading the Tribune every day and I am a Democrat. Now and then you print letters from some of your Republican readers who are so angered by the Molly Ivins column that they want it removed. This is an excellent example of the growing and destructive political divide that is being orchestrated by the Republicans.
Americans should fiercely defend free speech and tolerate differing viewpoints. These things have made our country great. Democrats have endured hate-talk radio, TV censorship and partisan TV news reporting.
Taking the high road has not worked for Democrats. What we are seeing now is simply exasperated Democrats fighting fire with fire.
Ivins is very well informed and has plenty to say. Everyone, including Republicans, should breathe easier knowing that she is still allowed space on the Tribune editorial page.
