We all may hail with joy and relief the capture of Iraq’s bloody tyrant, Saddam Hussein. But a salient question arises about the circumstances under which he should be tried for his crimes.
In the 1980s, the United States was a de facto ally and gave major aid to Hussein in his war against Iran. During that period he used poison gas not only against the Iranians but also against his own Kurdish citizens. I believe our country was fully aware of these actions but did not in any significant way discontinue our support or break off relations.
If, then, Hussein is charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity, is it possible that the U.S. would find itself implicated on the grounds that it possessed a degree of complicity?
