Young Latinas raised in a tradition in which the ideal woman embodies “la sufrida y abnegada,” sacrificing all for the welfare of her children and family, may have few role models close at hand to give them a glimpse of any other kind of life. So says clinical psychologist Ana Nogales in “Latina Power! Using 7 Strengths You Already Have to Create the Success You Deserve” (Fireside, $12). Encouragement to explore other options may also be in short supply; Nogales talks about the misgivings her own parents had–as well as their pride in her–as she pursued the course that led to her successful career.

Where some people might see barriers to choice, Nogales sees opportunity, identifying seven traits that she says Latinas can use to have interesting, productive lives outside the home as well as in it. They include a creative spirit, a survivor’s passionate determination, a comadre’s (girlfriend’s) ability to network, and a diva’s confidence. In each case she draws on the experiences of real-life Latinas to illustrate her points and inspire her readers.

On cultural influence: “Contrary to what many people think about Latino culture holding women back, the reasons for these women’s successes lay in . . . qualities which have their roots in our cultural origins.”
