It was a self-described “edgy” crowd of fashion’s glitterati–sporting black, gray and more black–and packing the Gold Coast boutique Ikram. Hot design duo Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler had hit town. How hot? Ikram sold out of everything and had to hurriedly phone New York for samples. The fans flocked mercilessly to the guys with the Hollywood looks. An otherwise cool 23-year-old lost it a bit, dragging her aunt across the store to meet them. Even less cool was this tragically unhip soul, who showed up in a shiny, light-blue duster/pants outfit. Observing it all was Michigan out-of-towner Steve Cash, who, in a Detroit Red Wings jacket, followed friend Alan Johnson into the private party. They’d cruised Mike Ditka’s, Buddy Guy’s Legends and Chicago-style pizzerias, and were headed to a piano bar, in hopes of hanging out with a few of the in-town Detroit Lions. A cautious Cash seemed ready to flee this scene. But Johnson, a real go-get-it guy, had this advice for his friend: “I told him he needs to get an attitude. And a glass of wine.”
