The promise of a “moondance ‘neath the cover of October skies” was one well kept during the Infant Welfare Society’s annual charity gala recently held in the penthouse of Hotel 71 on Wacker Drive. Guests were treated to a stunning panoramic view of downtown Chicago, the velvet night sky and slivered moon a backdrop made to order. Co-chairs Sherry Schmitter Block and Diane Jacobson couldn’t have been happier. Neither could the 125 guests gathered to support an organization that has been serving working poor women and children in Chicago since 1911. A silent auction and raffle offered up such goodies as a deluxe wine cooler stocked with vintage cabernets. Guest Ken Kromash ticked off his bids on dinner at Lawry’s and tickets to the Manet exhibit, but the real prize of the evening came from pediatric dentist Melissa Vargar. Flashing her pearly whites, Vargas explained her Infant Welfare connection: ” I was a patient at their clinic when I was a kid. My experiences there were great. They inspired me to go to dental school.”
