Griffith High School senior Alex Tsirtsis joins some elite company when he becomes only the third prep wrestler in the 41-year history of the Midlands Wrestling Championships, beginning Monday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tsirtsis, an undefeated three-time Indiana prep champion, joins Jimmy Carr of Erie, Pa., and Cary Kolat of Rices Landing, Pa. “It’s like a true test before the NCAA tournament,” said Tsirtsis (pronounced “Cert-sis”), who has attended the event with his father for years. “I don’t know if there is a tougher college tournament besides the NCAA championship. I just wanted to get a head start and see where I stand.” Tsirtsis won the recent Conant Invitational in Hoffman Estates. He’ll wrestle at 141 pounds.
