Being a garbage man meant more than just picking up trash to Paul C. Scheide. For 35 years, the Chicago native worked behind city garbage trucks, meeting interesting people and often passing along discarded bikes and toys to needy children. “He used to always take care of the kids,” said his son James. Mr. Scheide, 79, died of diabetes Sunday, Dec. 28 , in his Mt. Greenwood home. Mr. Scheide graduated from Englewood High School and served in the Army during World War II. After the war, he worked a couple of years for a roofing supply company, where he was secretary of the employee union. He began working in the city’s Department of Streets and Sanitation in the late 1940s. He worked mostly on the city’s South Side. Mr. Scheide enjoyed working outside. “The cold weather never bothered him,” his son said. Before retiring in the early 1990s, Mr. Scheide worked 10 years as an office clerk in Streets and Sanitation. “He would have still been working if it wasn’t for his health,” his son said. In addition to his son, Mr. Scheide is survived by another son, Paul; a brother, Edwin; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Beverly Ridge Funeral Home, 10415 S. Kedzie Ave., Chicago. Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Christina Catholic Church,11005 S.
