Lorena L. Strobel, 82, a six-time ladies club champion in golf from 1968 to 1987 at Rolling Green Country Club in Arlington Heights, did not start playing golf until her late 30s, when she decided she wanted to spend more time with her husband. “My dad was a golfer, and he was always out golfing,” said her daughter Lorena Gorey. Mrs. Strobel died Tuesday, Dec. 30, of cancer in Luther Village, a retirement community in Arlington Heights. Mrs. Strobel was born and raised in Miami. After graduating from high school she was training to become a medical technician in Philadelphia when she met her future husband, Walter Strobel. Mrs. Strobel was 19 when they got married and moved to Chicago. In 1956, they moved to Arlington Heights. “She was a very good friend to a lot of different people,” her daughter said, keeping in touch with people she knew from years of workouts at the local gym, country club and retirement village. Her husband died in 1979. In addition to her daughter, survivors include three sons, Ray, John and Lee; another daughter, Judy Small; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Lutheran Home and Services, St. John Chapel, 800 W. Oakton St., Arlington Heights.
