As I watched Monday’s Bears news conference, this thought struck me: A third-rate general manager hired by a second-rate president has just fired a first-rate coach burdened with below-average talent and experience. The three of them looked and acted their parts: Jerry Angelo as the disingenuous bureaucrat, Ted Phillips the rumpled accountant and Dick Jauron the unflappable leader of men.
It made you wonder how in this strange world of professional football the first two get four-year contract extensions and Jauron loses his job. By all rights, it should have been the other way around.
