I attended the Midlands wrestling finals at Northwestern on Tuesday evening. I saw 30 matches, some of which were very exciting. I watched athletes win and lose, but I was more fascinated by what I didn’t see.

I didn’t see fake cell phone calls, signs, Sharpies in socks, athletes cussing at benches or any of the other things that are becoming all too common in professional sports. Here were athletes competing at one of the highest levels because they enjoy it, not for multiyear, multimillion-dollar contracts or shoe deals. How refreshing.
