Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

How about sending Sam Smith to the Sun-Times for a 1986 IBM Selectric typewriter and a case of whiteout? I bet they would throw in a case of copier paper for good measure. This move would allow the Tribune to clear enough cap space to acquire an NBA writer who has a clue.

The final straw was Smith’s proposal for acquiring Kobe Bryant (Tribune, Dec. 29). Let’s get this straight: Smith says the Bulls should trade Antonio Davis and one of their two best young players, Jamal Crawford or Kirk Hinrich, for a third-string point guard (Charlie Ward) and another player who has been routinely shipped around the league and who now apparently has worn out his welcome in New York (Antonio McDyess). And the purpose of this trade is for the Bulls to clear enough cap space after the season to sign Bryant? What kind of delusional rock is Smith living under?

Smith apparently thinks it’s a good idea for the Bulls to make this move on the 50-50 bet that Bryant will be found innocent at his trial this summer and not be locked away for the rest of his NBA career. After that minor hurdle has been cleared, Bryant would then have to decide that he really wants to leave the Lakers, which is utter speculation right now. Then Bryant would have to agree to sign with what has been the least successful NBA franchise over the past five, and maybe by then six, years to be part of their latest rebuilding effort.

Yeah, Sam, that’s the ticket.
