As my family mourns the loss of my great-uncle Carl W. Siegel, World War II and Korean War veteran, I feel compelled to write in his memory.
Throughout my life I recall reading many letters to the editor composed by Carl. His purpose was to remind all of us why we have days like Memorial and Veterans Day. He often suggested that instead of lighting up the grill or throwing back a few cold ones with the neighbors, one should attend a memorial service to commemorate the lives of the men and women who selflessly fought to ensure us all freedom.
So as he is laid to rest, let us be reminded of all the men and women serving us today, as well as the men and women who fought long ago to give us what is often taken for granted.
