Mike Downey is right: Gambling is an addiction and therefore a disease. Lying is not a disease. Pete Rose admits to being a liar. I would bet that the length of his big lie and denial is almost as long as his playing career.
If Rose lied about this, how can we believe him when he says he never bet on his own team? Get back to me in 14 years on that one. There is no excuse or alibi for his premeditated, self-serving lies.
A reinstatement of Rose to baseball and the horror of a possible enshrinement will leave a stain on the game far greater than that of an old Phil Niekro baseball. Given the chance, I’m sure Rose would probably sign it for 10 bucks.
