Employment security should be added to homeland security. When unemployment rises above a specified level regionally or statewide, the symptoms of psychological damage will already be exhibited as worry by affected individuals.
This of course leads to further complications in economic damage first to individuals (savings rate falls, credit ratings impacted, debt soars).
Subsequently, state governments find the need to cut budgets due to falling tax revenue (California, Illinois) and needed programs are cut (education, after-school programs) leading to a downward spiral that is difficult to stop.
We need to feel safe in our jobs as well as our homes, our neighborhoods and our country.
